Abstract

Background: The purpose of the study was to allow Year 6 students to demonstrate their investigative skills to their new science teachers and to facilitate closer working relationships between primary and secondary schools to support transition.

Aims: The main aim of this development work was to allow Year 6 students to consolidate their experience of doing science at primary school in an open-ended investigation, and to prepare them for transition to secondary school.

Methods: The participants of this project included primary and secondary ASTs, National Strategy consultants, teachers, and students from primary and secondary schools. The methods used included producing stimulating material, launching events, providing online resources, AST support, and selling the project through conferences.

Findings: The project allowed Year 6 and 7 students to demonstrate their investigative skills to their new science teachers, and was successful in engaging students and motivating them to learn. It also facilitated collaboration between primary and secondary schools.

Implications: The findings suggest that the project was successful in engaging students, motivating them to learn, and helping them develop investigative skills. It also facilitated collaboration between primary and secondary schools, and provided teachers with useful assessment data.
