Abstract
Background: The purpose of the study was to empower the subject leader to observe and feed back on maths lessons throughout the school, build confidence and skill in feeding back key messages to colleagues, and follow up points for development from observations with colleagues.

Aims: The main aim is to empower the subject leader to observe and feed back on maths lessons throughout the school, build confidence and skill in feeding back key messages, and follow up points for development from observations.

Methods: The participants in this activity are the head teacher, subject leader, experienced consultant or senior teacher, and teachers. They all need to understand the purpose of the observations and have the necessary knowledge and resources to carry out the activity. The methods used included support from an experienced consultant or senior teacher, understanding the purpose of observations, familiarizing with Ofsted criteria, and agreement with the head teacher to make time available for observations and feedback.

Findings: The main findings of this project are that the subject leader has gained confidence in monitoring, challenging and supporting colleagues, and that more able pupils are now being challenged more robustly with higher expectations of average pupils.

Implications: The findings suggest that empowering subject leaders to observe and feed back on maths lessons, and providing them with the necessary CPD, can lead to improved outcomes for more able pupils, increased confidence in teachers, and better use of data to inform teaching.
