Background: The purpose of the study was to narrow the gap in achievement between FSM and non-FSM pupils by addressing the level of classroom challenge and developing reflective skills in all subject areas. Aims: The main aim of the project was to narrow the gap in achievement between FSM and non-FSM pupils by addressing the level of classroom challenge. Methods: The participants in the project were 18 G&T pupils on the free school meals register, a champion G&T lead teacher, and the Local Authority School Improvement Adviser. Methods used included analyzing the makeup of G&T register, comparing numbers of FSM children on the G&T register with attainment, developing reflective skills, improving confidence, using learning logs, observing lessons, introducing skills boards, and using data to study pupils' reactions to lessons. Findings: The project aimed to narrow the gap in achievement between FSM and non-FSM pupils by addressing the level of classroom challenge. The initiative developed reflective skills in all subject areas and improved confidence. It was found that children enjoyed the opportunity to participate in genuine paired work and that the use of learning logs allowed them to reflect on their learning. Implications: The findings suggest that providing pupils with the opportunity to reflect on their learning and identify when they are challenged can lead to improved focus and better work practices. Additionally, the use of learning logs and higher order thinking skills can help to narrow the gap in achievement between FSM and non-FSM pupils.en
