Abstract
The Engineering for One Planet (EOP) initiative aims to revolutionize engineering education to align with the increasing significance of sustainability across all engineering roles. Supported by The Lemelson Foundation and catalyzed in 2020 with VentureWell and Alula Consulting, EOP has been co-created with numerous contributors from various engineering fields, regions, lived experiences, and sectors - including academia (leadership, faculty, and students), industry, government and non-profits. EOP is dedicated to equipping future engineers with the understanding of essential skills and principles related to social and environmental sustainability. The EOP Framework comprises a curated, vetted set of core and advanced learning outcomes centered on sustainability and leadership competencies, spanning nine key topic areas important to equipping all graduating engineers - irrespective of their specific subdiscipline - with the skills, knowledge, understanding, and mindsets necessary to safeguard and enhance our planet and quality of life. Currently, there are four companion "how to" teaching guides developed for the EOP Framework. The guides facilitate the integration of sustainability-focused content into diverse engineering curricula and programs, including core and required courses. All EOP resources are free, open source, and have Creative Commons licensing. An EOP interactive workshop was held at the EESD Conference in June 2025, led by co-founder of the EOP initiative and lead editor of the EOP Framework and its associated teaching guides. Workshop attendees were introduced to and examined the EOP Framework along with its companion teaching materials. Participants explored how EOP resources facilitate the incorporation of sustainability into engineering curricula. Subsequently, workshop attendees worked together in pairs to collaboratively co-design climate-focused engineering curricula using EOP resources. Authors plan to compile workshop-generated teaching materials - aimed at an international audience - into a new EOP Framework companion teaching guide for publication on the EOP website, with recognition given to all participants for their contributions.
