Abstract
Context: Hope Academy recognized the need for a specialized approach to support its most vulnerable learners, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and other challenges such as social anxiety and sensory needs. This led to the establishment of the Hope Centre, a dedicated space aimed at providing structured support, tailored interventions, and fostering a sense of belonging. Aims: The primary aim of the Hope Centre is to create an inclusive environment that caters to diverse learning needs by offering resources and support designed specifically for students struggling within a traditional classroom framework. It seeks to enhance academic performance, improve mental health and wellbeing, and increase attendance rates among learners with SEND. Methods: The implementation involved designing a quiet and secure learning space with various resources, including a sensory room and dedicated teaching areas. The centre provides personalized support during the school day, including access to digital curriculum materials via Microsoft Teams and alternative pathways for more vulnerable students. Staff include a non-teaching SEND Lead, dedicated TAs, and various specialists who deliver targeted programs and training. Findings: Since its operational launch, the Hope Centre has significantly improved academic progress among learners with SEND, with data indicating better attainment outcomes compared to their non-SEND peers. Attendance rates among these learners have risen, and external alternative provision needs have decreased notably. Students report feeling safer and more valued, attributing their positive experiences to the supportive environment the Centre offers. Implications: The successes of the Hope Centre suggest that schools may benefit from providing dedicated spaces and tailored interventions for vulnerable learners. The study underscores the importance of staff training, collaborative support, and intentional integration strategies to foster meaningful inclusion. By closely monitoring student progress and needs, schools can adapt their offerings to enhance the overall educational experience for all learners.
