Abstract
Facing rising SEND complexity and limited specialist places, this multi-academy trust identified inconsistent curriculum intent within nurture and adapted provision. Through a Whole School SEND Professional Development Group, SENCOs collaborated with a local special school to design a Specialist SEND Curriculum Pathway (SSCP) across Pre-Formal, Semi-Formal and Formal routes. Actions included curriculum mapping, staff visits to specialist settings, alignment with EHCP outcomes, and development of consistent assessment approaches. Evidence of impact includes the creation of The Gateway specialist pathway, improved attendance and engagement, increased independence, positive parental feedback, and clearer transition routes. The SSCP now provides a coherent, flexible alternative to specialist placement within a mainstream context.
