Abstract
Context: The APOL-LLO (Accelerated Purposeful Organised Life - Long Learning Opportunities) initiative was developed at Tor View, a large special school catering to students with Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD), aiming to improve skill acquisition through a structured and ethical approach. Acknowledging that learners with SLD face unique challenges, the school sought to refine traditional pedagogical models to better align them with current educational frameworks and practices. Aims: The primary aim of the APOL-LLO project was to enhance existing behaviourist strategies by integrating modern methodologies that emphasize respect and effectiveness. The project intended to create an innovative teaching strategy and targeted intervention for learners who were not making expected progress, thereby addressing their specific learning needs. Methods: The project utilized the EEF's four-phase model of change - Explore, Prepare, Deliver, and Sustain. Initial phases involved reviewing and updating existing teaching practices, developing relevant training materials, and conducting staff training on task analysis and reinforcement practices. The intervention was delivered in familiar environments through short, targeted sessions focusing on English, Maths, and Personal and Social Development skills. Findings: The pilot program yielded positive results, with all participants moving from 'expected' to 'above average' progress. Quantitative outcomes showed that 100% of learners achieved their Maths targets, while 83% and 78% met their goals in English and PSD, respectively. Qualitative feedback indicated enhanced learner engagement, confidence, and independence. Staff reported increased comfort and capability in supporting learners with complex needs. Implications: The APOL-LLO strategy demonstrates the value of task analysis and structured reinforcement in engaging learners with SLD while also benefiting those with Mild Learning Difficulties (MLD) and Profound Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD). The project's success in promoting measurable progress and engagement suggests that similar methodologies may be applicable in other educational contexts, encouraging further exploration into tailored interventions for diverse learner needs.
